Android 17: What Developers and Users Should Know

Android 17, released in 2026, is not just another annual update. Google calls it the start of Android's "transition to an intelligence system", putting AI at the centre of the OS rather than treating it as a bolt-on feature. Beta 4 (platform stability) landed in April 2026. Final release is rolling out to Pixel devices with broader OEM adoption following.

Major new features in Android 17

1. Adaptive-first development standard

Android 17 enforces adaptive layouts as the default development model. Apps must now properly support all screen sizes: compact phone, unfolded foldable, tablet, desktop mode and large-screen Chromebook. The era of phone-only Android apps is officially over. Multi-window, split-screen and freeform windowing are expected, not optional.

2. Private Space enhancements

Building on Android 15's Private Space feature, Android 17 adds biometric-locked app containers that are invisible to the app drawer, recent apps and notifications when locked. Users can have entirely separate work and personal profiles with one-tap switching and independent encryption.

3. Predictive back gesture (finalised)

The predictive back gesture, previewing the destination screen as you swipe back, is now the default system navigation behaviour. Apps must implement the predictive back APIs for a consistent user experience. The legacy back behaviour is deprecated.

4. Satellite connectivity support

Android 17 adds native APIs for satellite messaging and emergency SOS via satellite. This is critical for African markets where cellular coverage is incomplete. Users can send text messages via satellite when no cellular or WiFi signal is available. The API handles the unique latency and bandwidth constraints of satellite connections.

5. AI Core and on-device intelligence

Google's AI Core becomes a first-class system service. Apps can leverage on-device AI models for translation, summarisation, image generation and smart replies, without sending data to the cloud. This is faster, works offline and preserves privacy. Gemini Nano is deeply integrated into the OS for system-level AI features.

6. Enhanced privacy dashboard

Android 17's privacy dashboard now shows a 7-day timeline of which apps accessed: camera, microphone, location, clipboard, photos, contacts, and nearby devices. Users can revoke permissions from the timeline view. Apps that access sensitive data in the background get flagged with prominent notifications.

7. Per-app language preferences (finalised)

Users can set different languages for different apps independently of the system language. An English system setting with a Luganda messaging app and a Swahili news app, all working simultaneously. Apps simply use the new locale APIs; no custom language selectors needed.

8. Photo picker with cloud media support

The system photo picker now supports cloud media providers (Google Photos, OneDrive). Users select photos from their cloud storage without granting the app broad storage permissions. Enhanced privacy with full media access.

9. App archiving (system-level)

Android 17 can automatically archive unused apps, removing the APK and temporary files while preserving user data. Archived apps appear greyed out and restore with one tap. This frees significant storage without losing app state.

10. Ultra HDR and camera extensions

Android 17 expands Ultra HDR support and adds new camera extensions for: night mode, bokeh (portrait), face retouching, HDR video, and computational photography APIs. Apps can leverage the device's full camera hardware capabilities through standardised APIs.

Behaviour changes developers must handle

Edge-to-edge enforcement

Android 17 mandates edge-to-edge rendering by default. System bars (status bar, navigation bar) are transparent or translucent. Apps must handle window insets correctly, content must not be hidden behind system bars.

Foreground service changes

New restrictions on long-running foreground services. Apps must justify why they need to run continuously. Short-lived work should use WorkManager or JobScheduler. Only genuinely user-visible tasks (navigation, music playback, call) qualify for foreground service use.

Background activity launches

Further restrictions on launching activities from the background. Apps cannot interrupt the user with unexpected full-screen intents. Notifications with actions are the preferred way to engage users.

Storage permissions

Scoped storage is further tightened. Broad file system access requires explicit user consent per folder or per operation. The MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission faces stricter Play Store review.

New APIs for developers

  • Eyedropper API: system-level colour picker for apps.
  • Bubble API enhancements: improved multi-window bubble support.
  • Grammatical Inflection API: apps can correctly address users by grammatical gender without knowing personal details.
  • Credential Manager: unified sign-in across passkeys, passwords and federated identity.
  • Health Connect: on-device health data sharing between apps with user consent.

What this means for African developers and businesses

  • Satellite connectivity is a game-changer for apps serving rural areas. Offline-first + satellite backup means coverage everywhere.
  • Offline AI means your apps can offer intelligent features without constant internet, critical for markets where data is expensive and connectivity patchy.
  • Adaptive layouts mean your app must work on the full range of Android devices, from budget Tecno phones to Samsung Galaxy foldables to Chromebooks.
  • Privacy enhancements align with East Africa's growing data protection regulations. Android 17 makes compliance easier by giving users transparent control.
