How to Choose a Website Design Company in Uganda

Choosing the right website design company in Uganda can make the difference between a website that brings customers and one that just sits there costing you money. Here is how to choose wisely.

7 questions to ask before you hire

1. "Can I see 3–5 examples of websites you have built recently?"

A portfolio tells the real story. Look for:

  • Do the sites load fast on a phone?
  • Do they look professional and modern?
  • Are they for businesses similar to yours?
  • Do the contact forms actually work?

2. "Will I own my website, domain and content completely?"

This is critical. Some developers register your domain in their name or use proprietary platforms that lock you in. You should own everything: domain, hosting, content and code.

3. "What is included in the price, and what is extra?"

Get a written breakdown. Typical inclusions: design, development, basic SEO, mobile responsiveness, SSL, training. Common extras: content writing, advanced SEO, stock photos, ongoing maintenance.

4. "How long will it take, and what happens if you are late?"

A realistic timeline for a business website is 1–3 weeks. Ask what happens if deadlines slip. A professional company communicates early and often.

5. "What happens after launch? Do you offer support?"

The first 30 days after launch are when issues appear. Ask about post-launch support, bug fixes and what ongoing maintenance looks like.

6. "Do you build with SEO in mind?"

If the answer is "we can add SEO later," be careful. SEO should be built into the site from day one: clean URLs, meta tags, fast loading and mobile-friendly design.

7. "Can I speak to a past client?"

Any confident company will connect you with a happy client. If they hesitate, ask why.

Red flags to watch for

  • Prices that are too good to be true. A "professional website for UGX 300K" almost always means a copied template with no support.
  • No written agreement. Verbal promises mean nothing when things go wrong.
  • They cannot explain what technology they use. You do not need to be technical, but they should be able to explain it simply.
  • No portfolio or fake portfolio. Reverse-image-search their "work" to be sure.
  • They are impossible to reach. If they take 3 days to reply before you have paid, imagine after.
